TOPIC 3: The Sermon on the Mount

Read the relevant passages from Matthew, Mark, and Luke concerning the Sermon on the Mount (see Aland's Gospel Synopsis pages 49-64). Read them as if you've never heard them before. What do you find? What are the main themes happening here? Why are these themes important? What if the present-day church took this teaching seriously? How are we doing?

TOPIC 2: Jesus' Baptism

Read the relevant passages from all four Gospels concerning the Baptism of Jesus (Matthew 3:13-17; Mark 1:9-11; Luke 3:21-22; John 1:29-34; Do not forget to read them in context!!). What do these passages say about Jesus as God's Son, or the Son of Man (see Stein chapter 7)? What do we learn about the Trinity in these passages? Why are they important? What information from Topic 1 might inform your reading of these passages?

TOPIC 1: Gospel Introductions

Read Blomberg Chapters 6-9 (if you haven't already). This information is similar to what you'll find in the beginning of the commentaries. What did you learn from this reading? What did you discover that was new or unexpected? Why is it important to consider when, why, by whom and to whom these Gospels were written?
